Hi

I'm not sure if this affects any of you but...

covering letter written in response by the European Sled Dog Racing Association.

Dear Commissioner Dalli,

The European Sled Dog Racing Association has been informed of Commission Regulation
N° 388/2010 of 6th May 2010 implementing Regulation (EC) n° 998/2003 of the European Parliament and of the Council as regards to the maximum number of pet animals of certain species that may be the subject of non-commercial movement and henceforth limiting this to five pet animals.

We would very respectfully like to address this issue with you and the European Commission in order to express our deep concerns regarding this decision and its potential impact on our sports and the pet fancy in general. You will find our comments in the enclosed document.

The ESDRA is very much aware that you have many important items on your agenda, and sincerely appreciates your attention in this matter.

The Board members are fully available to answer any questions you may have, and look forward to your reply

This is on the website for a DEFRA authorised Ferry company:

"Currently, a limit of five pets per person is applicable for entries of pets into the UK from listed non-EU countries, whereas an unlimited amount of pets may enter from EU Member States. As of 26th May 2010, a limit of five pets will be implemented for pet dogs, cats and ferrets entering into or moving between EU Member States, including the UK, as stated in Commission Regulation (EU) No 388/2010 of 6th May 2010. Please note that any person responsible for a pet/pets must be 16 years old or over. As an authorised pet carrier it is your responsibility to ensure that this condition of the pet travel scheme is adhered to.

It is apparently to prevent commercial movement of cats dogs and ferrets being disguised as non-commercial.

It is per person but just be aware if you travel to europe ever with your dogs.

David

Oh well, that puts the kibosh on my plans of getting another pup and moving out to Bali to take up painting by numbers.

Dear Scurry Bandits members

Thank you for having a look at what the European Sled Dog Racing Association wrote to the European Commission - and ESDRA has had a reply!

The Commission explained that while they still consider that an effort must be made to stop the fraud and traffic, *after intial experience* it appeared to them that the measures applicable to the transport of more than five pet dogs or cats were *disproportionate* when it came to animals being transported for sports or show events. The Commission is now studying the issue and plans to make further proposals and *reducing the administrative burden linked to the implementation of the current provisions.*

Letters written to the EU Parliament members also sparked questions by the MEPs to the commission about the effect of this descision on people participating in dog sports and shows.

We have a small victory here but we must keep on top of it. ESDRA plans to stay in touch with the Commission to make sure that we (including all dog and cat related activities) are heard this time. I am currently working with people from other concered organisations on "suggestions" to the Commission - I doubt they will want to rescind the decision completely, so we need to "help" them make texts which are acceptable to all, simple and easy to implement.

But do keep writing your MEP's! We need you gundog people to help us: the dog sports community is vast, and the Commission needs to hear from all of us. The more sports they hear from, the more they will listen. Together I believe we can beat this thing.

Best regards and thanks for letting me pop in on this...
